Yesterday the team and I began work on a new project. This project is currently in the pre-production stage and we will be working on multiple documents as well as creating a prototype for the riskiest mechanics in the game. The pre-production stage will only go for 2 weeks. The team is comprised of 2 Programmers, 2 Artists and 3 designers (that's me!).
Elevator Pitch
“My Mythical Mate is a 3D pet-simulator action game where you raise and upgrade your pet companion and take them out to fight enemies in a side-scrolling shoot-em-up style.
Play as a witch and her familiar to fight against the “Organisation” seeking to capture and mechanize the mystical creatures of the land.”
Decisions
As a team it is critical to talk about what we want the game to be about in all different aspects. We need to know the camera perspective, genres, mechanics, art style, programming language, what engine to use etc. So at first to help brainstorm ideas for this project we decided to create a google docs file and starting writing out dot points for the must haves of the game. We used a PowerPoint presentation created by one of the programmers prior, to help as reference for our ideas. You can view this PowerPoint here if you are interested.
The way that we brainstormed these ideas was going through each slide of the PowerPoint and asking questions of Nghia (our programmer and the guy who first pitched the game idea). As he was most intimate with the idea we quizzed him on things like "so how did you imagine this mechanic was to work?" or "what would the consequence be if the player did this...".
After brainstorming and creating this messy google docs file of our ideas, must haves and things we still needed to discuss we wrote out a plan for the things we needed to do first. We began to work on an Art Bible, Game Design Document and Technical Design Document. I primarily will be working on the GDD (as a designer) over the course of the 2 weeks as it is a "living document" meaning that it should be constantly updated and tweaked with the decisions of the team as we change ideas and iterate upon them. You can see a version of this document here as of the time of writing this. Keep in mind it is not quite fleshed out and finished and a more up to date version will be posted in future.
