Regicide

Itch.io Game Page

Regicide is a game about a lone assassin that sneaks through the dark dungeons of evil monarch's castles in order to reach their royally corrupt thrones and take them out for the good of the kingdom. The game features 3 levels and in each you play as the assassin armed with nothing but a knife and your wits you will need to either sneak past or take out the enemies in your path to reach the king and commit regicide.

My Overview of the Project

This project was submitted as part of the 2021 Low Resolution Game Jam (LowRezJam 2021). The limitation of the game jam was that the resolution of the game had to be within a 64x64 or lower resolution. This was an interesting challenge to overcome but was ultimately achieved by rendering the camera to a render texture with a 64x64 resolution, then having another camera render the render texture as UI. I worked on this project with 2 programmers and 1 sound designer. The highlight was working with people I had never worked with before and had previously never met, it was an experience I will not forget and one I learned a lot from.

My Contributions

  • Concepted and created all the levels for the game

  • Playtested and tweaked game as needed

  • Reported bugs to programmers and artists as needed

  • Held regular meetings with other team members to discuss progress, bugs or other thoughts to ensure the game was finished on time as polished as possible in the short timeframe.

  • Designed a tutorial to teach players the controls before the first level.

Design Decisions

I found that our small team worked really well, and I am really proud of this game despite it being very rough around the edges (due to short time frame). It was my first game jam and was also my first introduction to Trello as a task management software. Some of the things I had to keep in mind when designing the levels for this game was how to best present the player with the information they needed despite the size of the screen. If I had made the environments too big, the player could have gotten lost in them. Instead, I chose to focus on creating a smaller environment in the hopes that players would learn the rooms and guard patrols so that if they got caught, they would feel empowered and smart at being able to sneak around them successfully next time.

Additionally, adding in the mechanic to kill the guards added another strategy for players, at no point in the game is it strictly necessary to kill any guards, however doing so can help players get through the game much easier, as they no longer have to worry about a potential threat. This meant that for players that wanted the extra challenge, they could try to complete the game in a "passive" way, or could even try to speedrun the game without getting caught.

The game featured some pretty cool things such as the guards being able to "hear" you walking, making sneaking  recommended when close to a guard. Another cool feature was designing the levels so that players could use a key to open a door that would give a shortcut but would also make them have to find another key to open the throne room door. This meant that I could give players an option to choose between sneaking past a difficult guard patrol or using the key to bypass them but ultimately having to explore more to find a second key. Allowing small choices like these in the levels, I felt made the game feel less like a tunnel the player was being shunted through, despite the game being linear in design. This game was a lot of fun to work on and I hope to do more game jams in the future.
